a good buy
The DAV S300 was impressive two years ago when I bought it, and it continues to produce excellent sound/picture quality. I even find myself using it instead of my sound-system for CDS, mainly for the clarity of the speakers and the power of the SWoofer. However, even when the system was new, I could hear slight distortion when I played CDs loudly (volume at just 25/30). Furthermore, when I turn the volume up to appreciate the full cinema experience while watching DVDs, the dialogue often distorts through the centre speaker. The systems inability to play CDRs does not bother me, but I did not expect the sound quality to feel cheap. There is also a slight continual hiss from the speakers, even when muted. The remote control is too big, but its easy to use –my only other complaint on this point being the round-about fashion in which you’re are forced to locate the A-B repeat function, when on other systems you can simply press a single button. Oh, and there is also no way of opening the CD tray from the remote, but now I’m just being lazy. Apart from these factors, I enjoy using the DAV S300, and I especially enjoy experimenting with the various sound fields. To test this system or any 5.1 set-up, you cant beat the opening sequence (the fish-market scene) from Hannibal, or the 360-degree explosion in Swordfish! The slightly disappointing sound when pushed to its limits does not, by any means render the DAV S300 a poor purchase, and it doesnt look, sound or feel dated despite its age. A great system.

Great DVD/CD/tuner combination, but NO multi-region
I bought this Sony-system a couple of years ago and have used it with pleasure. It is great to have a tuner, CD, and DVD-system in one. The sound on the system is great, especially with good DVD-films. However, the system now starts to show its age - it does not play CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, MP3s and multi-regional DVDs. I would love to upgrade just the player and keep the speakers. As long as you know the restriction of this system you will be satisfied.

CDr/Rw
Fantastic piece of kit only draw back is that you cant play most CDrs and CDrws.
Stick your playstation through it on a projector for a mind blowing experience, the sound is brill
